Description
The front of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Standing on either side are the Most Holy Theotokos and Saint John the Baptist, the Prophet and Forerunner of the Lord, who are especially revered as powerful intercessors before God for all humanity.
Above the Crucifixion is an icon of the Holy Trinity—an image of the Triune God revealed in the form of three angels who appeared to the Patriarch Abraham.
At the foot of the cross is an image of the Great Martyr George the Victory-Bearer, one of the most beloved saints of the Christian Church. He is honoured as the patron saint of soldiers, a helper in agricultural labour, and a spiritual protector in the unseen struggle against the forces of evil.
The lower part of the reverse depicts the Holy Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky, venerated as a defender of Orthodox Christians and a patron saint of warriors.
At the centre of the reverse is the traditional short prayer commonly inscribed on Orthodox crosses:
“Save and protect.”
Around it appears the opening passage of the protective Prayer to the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. This prayer is traditionally recited in times of danger and carried as a source of spiritual strength and protection from evil:
“Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered; and let those who hate Him flee from before His face. As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; and as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish before those who love God.”
