The venerable confessor and wonderworker Gabriel of Samtavro (in the world, Goderdzi Urgebadze) was born on August 26, 1929, in Georgia. In his family he was more often called Vasiko, in memory of his father, who had departed this life early. From childhood, the future elder showed an extraordinary longing for God and for the spiritual life.
The First Steps Toward Faith
One day little Goderdzi heard a woman say to another during an argument: “You have crucified me like Christ.” Interested in the meaning of these words, the boy asked the adults who Christ was and what the word “crucify” meant. He was advised to go to church. There he first heard about the Gospel and decided to obtain this book. After saving some money, he bought the Holy Scriptures and studied them with such zeal that, a few years later, he knew the text almost entirely by heart.
From his youth, a desire for monastic life was born in his heart. Later the elder would say: “There is no greater spiritual feat than monasticism.” He confirmed these words with his whole life.
Monasticism and Service
At the age of twenty-six, Goderdzi received monastic tonsure with the name Gabriel, in honor of Venerable Gabriel of Mount Athos, who became known for the miracle of bringing the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God to Athos. The elder preserved a special veneration for this holy icon until the end of his days.
In the courtyard of his home in Tbilisi, Father Gabriel built a small multi-domed church with his own hands. The construction was completed in the early 1960s. During the years of state atheism, many icons were destroyed and thrown away. The elder collected these holy images, cleaned them, restored them, and adorned them. His church gradually became a true collection of rescued icons.
A Confessor of the Faith in Years of Persecution
Love for God and for his people moved the elder to courageous actions. He prayed fervently for Georgia and was ready to offer himself as a sacrifice for its salvation.
On May 1, 1965, during a Soviet demonstration, Hieromonk Gabriel publicly burned a huge portrait of Lenin that had been placed on the building of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR. Afterward he addressed the people with a sermon about Christ. For this act he was brutally beaten and arrested by KGB officers.
During interrogations, Father Gabriel openly declared that a human being must not be deified, and that true glory belongs only to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Later he was sent for a psychiatric examination and was declared insane. The medical report contained a phrase that later became well known: “He believes in God and angels.” Yet his trials did not end there. Under pressure from the authorities, some church figures restricted his participation in divine services. For the elder this was an especially painful suffering, because he could not imagine his life without the Church and Holy Communion.
The Spiritual Feat of Foolishness for Christ
In the final years of his life, Father Gabriel labored spiritually at Samtavro Monastery in Mtskheta. For a time he lived in the old tower of King Mirian, and sometimes even in a chicken coop. His unusual behavior sometimes astonished those around him, but over time people understood that behind the outward strangeness there was the deepest humility and rare spiritual wisdom.
The elder could be strict and demanding, yet everyone felt his sincere love. He helped the poor, gave alms, comforted the sorrowful, and received many visitors. People came to him for advice, prayer, and support.
There are numerous testimonies of his clairvoyance and miraculous help. Many of his contemporaries spoke of the extraordinary grace-filled atmosphere that surrounded the elder.
Repose and Posthumous Veneration
Venerable Gabriel departed to the Lord on November 2, 1995, after a serious illness. According to his will, his body was buried without a coffin, wrapped in monastic clothing.
After his repose, many cases of healing and spiritual help began to occur at his grave. The flow of pilgrims has not ceased to this day.
On December 24, 2012, the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church glorified the elder among the saints as a venerable confessor and fool-for-Christ. Two years later, his incorrupt relics were uncovered. In 2014, the saint’s name was also included in the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Today Venerable Gabriel of Samtavro is one of the most revered saints of modern times. For many believers, he has become a symbol of fearless confession of the faith, love for people, and complete trust in God.
The Elder’s Spiritual Testament
The main theme of Venerable Gabriel’s preaching was love.
He taught:
“Above all rules and canons stands love. If a person hates even one neighbor, he is far from God. Even if it is difficult to love everyone, one must at least wish good for every person.”
The elder said that in the last times people would be saved by three virtues: love, humility, and kindness.
In his words:
“Kindness will open the gates of Paradise, humility will lead one inside, and love will reveal God.”
He constantly reminded people that the purpose of human life is to draw near to the Lord and to attain the Kingdom of Heaven. Without self-sacrifice, mercy, and good works, it is impossible to learn true love.
By his own example, Venerable Gabriel showed that holiness is attained not through outward feats, but through deep humility, selfless love, and complete devotion to Christ.
